Many people think of annulment as something done strictly to allow them to remarry in their church. While this is something done under church law, legal annulment is entirely different. Both actions, however, erase the marriage from the record as if it never happened. Legal annulment in NJ can happen for several reasons and before the court will review a case, a petition explaining the grounds for the request must first get accepted. Currently the state will allow a person or a couple to request their marriage be deemed void due to drug addiction, bigamy, fraud, disability and duress. Each claim must be backed up with legal and documentary evidence, and this is why annulment in NJ (and everywhere else) can often take longer than a standard divorce case.
