California Divorces

In 1969, it was California that initiated a whole new way to handle divorce ヨ the no fault divorce type. Today California divorces can include fault, no fault, summary and summary dissolutions. Each has specific requirements in order to be accepted by the courts, and each has a specific set of documents and court appearances that must occur. The easiest of all California divorces are those with the "summary" labels, and this is because they allow the entire process to be streamlined and simple. It also means, however, that the marriage must not have many details that can cause problems during a divorce either. For example, candidates for a summary divorce or dissolution (this ends a marriage without a single mandatory court appearance) may not usually have children, real property or assets and debts in any measurable amounts.

Fast Facts

  • California divorces all have somewhat lengthy waiting periods attached to the processing of documents and filings, and this is to prevent couples from terminating marriages too quickly.
