Children need the support of their parents, but when a divorce ends the marriage, they may need even more. Child support is the payment made by the non-custodial parent for the benefit of the child, whether it is directly or indirectly. There are no set rules for how a child support check can be spent after it is received. It is perfectly acceptable for a child support check to be used to pay for household expenses including utility bills or groceries. It is not meant to be used for spending money for the child and it can be spent rather than banked. If the non-custodial parent thinks that the child needs a savings account, new clothing or something else, they can offer to give this extra money over and beyond what is ordered without making demands on the child support check as it stands.
