Divorce Child

Divorce does more than just end a marriage; it changes the entire makeup of a family. A child of divorce will likely have to make many adjustments, including where he will be living, how the family gets together for holidays and other things about his life that will be forever changed. Most divorced parents will have to work outside of the home, so some divorced children may have a sitter or day care provider for the first time. Regardless of why the marriage ended, or the new situations the child must face, he must face them knowing that both of his parents love him. In many cases, the divorce child may begin to have behavioral or emotional problems stemming from the guilt and fear he/she feels. He/she may become convinced that the divorce was their own fault and that if they had only been a better child their parents would be better. The divorce might overcompensate with extreme good behavior or may act out and have legal issues outside of the home.
