A divorce decree is the court's final and formal order establishing and granting you a divorce. The divorce decree is the final document that ends your marriage. The decree can include many other aspects of the divorce besides just saying that your divorce was granted. If children are involved, usually child custody is included, as well as, child support and a visitation schedule. Property distribution schedule will also be part of the divorce decree. Alimony, Spousal Support or maintenance order could also be part of the divorce decree. The divorce decree is always archived in the public records of the county in which you received your divorce, at the courthouse in the vital records office. You will get a copy and so will your spouse. Parts of the divorce decree can be modified like the child support order, visitation order, custody, alimony orders and the alike. Other parts of the decree cannot be modified. For example, the property distribution cannot be modified once it has already been determined.
