Divorced Women

Divorced women make up over 10 percent of the population in the U.S. (this percentage does not include those who have remarried). Before the creation of "no-fault" divorce, the most common reasons women listed on divorce petitions were cruelty and desertion on the part of their husband. Now, many women simply choose to state "irreconcilable differences". Not having to prove that a spouse is abusive can make the divorce process less adversarial for many couples. However, divorced women still face many financial and emotional challenges. Often, women's income and standard of living drop substantially after a divorce. If a divorced woman is raising children, the stress of being a sole caretaker can be high. Conflicts with ex-husbands over child support and visitation are frequent and can make life even more difficult. Nevertheless, women are still the petitioners in most divorce cases.
