Family Laws

Family laws in each state govern domestic relationships. Because of this, family law is sometimes referred to as domestic law. This includes the relationship between spouses, and between parents and minor children. Divorces and legal separations fall under this category. A family law judge has the ability to determine custody, visitation rights, and support payments in the event that a couple is unable to come to an agreement. The wishes of the child may be taken into consideration when deciding custody if the child is considered to be old enough to make an informed decision. In the event that an individual wishes to deal with simple family court issues without the assistance of a lawyer (this type of self representation is called "pro se"), he or she can obtain the necessary forms from the court. Some counties have pro se assistance organizations or foundations that can help people navigate the intricacies of family law. These organizations sometimes make free services available to individuals who have low income and cannot afford a lawyer. They can assist clients with organizing their information, filling out forms correctly, and explaining how the various aspects of family law work.
