Father Rights

Father rights are often a matter of concern for men who are divorced or separated. There are many divorced couples who are able to eventually reach amicable or acceptable arrangements about children and finances. However, there are times when parents are unable or unwilling to cooperate with each other. In these cases, fathers sometimes have a difficult time establishing visitation or custody terms they find satisfactory. These individuals may turn to the fathers' rights movement for advice and encouragement. The resources provided by this movement can assist fathers in obtaining sole/joint custody or reducing child support payments. Sadly, some father rights advocates also encourage divorced men to use the court system to abuse and harass former spouses. Such techniques are rarely in the best interest of the children involved in the divorce. Extreme father rights activists are also proponents of the highly controversial "parental alienation syndrome" (PAS) theory. The PAS model suggests that signs that a father has abused a child actually indicate that the mother is brainwashing the child to hate his or her father. In general, both the legal and psychiatric communities fail to find this argument plausible.
