There is no legal separation in Michigan ﾖ a couple is either divorcing or seeking what is known as "separate maintenance". This is something very unique in the legal world because it allows a couple to be viewed as separate entities, but also provides a way to keep a formal and legal divorce from being attached to their personal records. For example, if a legal separation in Michigan is impossible, a couple can seek out a separate maintenance action and become divorced from everything except the actual legal boundaries of their marriage. This means simply that they cannot legally remarry, but will still enjoy some of the benefits of being married to their spouse ﾖ usually this is done to enable one spouse to remain covered by an insurance policy or for certain religious reasons.
