A marital settlement agreement is defined as the final arrangement and resolution of issues regarding a divorce, as well as a written and agreed upon schedule for meeting these agreements. Typically, couples will resolve divorce disputes amongst themselves, and in turn, provide a copy of a marital settlement agreement to the divorce courts for filing on record and approval. Marital settlement agreements should include plans for child custody, child support, alimony, visitation, division of assets, division of debts, and distribution of marital property. The final copy of the marital settlement agreement is then attached as part of the terms of the final divorce decree.
