Unwed Fathers Rights

Fathers do not have to be married to have legal rights when it comes to their children. Separated, divorced and non-wed couples must share in the responsibilities as it relates to the child in question. Responsibilities include financial support, custody arrangements, and visitation schedules. Financial support refers to child support payments, generally offered by the non-custodial parent to the custodial parent in order to raise the child. Custody arrangements refer to both legal and physical arrangements. Legal custody agreements refer to issues such as medical care and education decisions. Physical custody refers to the physical location in which the child resides. Unwed fathers can fight for custody and visitation rights. And, in the event that they are not granted custody, fathers can fight to ensure that the child support payments are fair and equitable. Unwed fathers are afforded the same rights as wed fathers who have divorced or separated from the child's mother. If there are any questions or concerns about the rights of a father, it is recommended that the father speaks to a qualified family attorney.
