My husband and I want a divorce but we don't want to spend a ton of money.  We want a divorce as cheaply as possible. Do you have any suggestions?

The primary cause of the skyrocketing cost in a divorce case is that the parties spend a lot of time fighting over property and/or children.  The more time spent arguing, the more it costs in attorney fees and the more time you waste reaching a resolution of the case.  However, if both parties are willing to work together to reach an amicable resolution, it is far more cost effective.

One way to accomplish this is to attend mediation.  Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution in which an unbiased third party helps the divorcing couple reach an agreement on property and children.  Although there is usually a fee for mediation, it is typically far less expensive than going all the way through to trial, and the parties usually walk away happier as well.
