There are different types of child custody based on if you want to have physical and/ legal custody. For instance, physical custody is where you have the right to live with you for a significant amount of time. Physical custody can either be sole custody, where you have custody majority of the time and your significant other has visitation, or joint custody. Joint physical custody is where your child spends time living at your house and the other parent’s house. For example, your child may stay with your for the school year and with the other parent for the summer. Bird’s nest custody is also an option in joint custody. This is where the child lives in a house all year around, but the parents alternate the days the live in the home.
Legal custody is different from physical custody. When legal custody is granted, you’re allowed to make decisions about your child. These decisions include where your child goes to school, the medical care received and religious affiliation. Both parents have joint legal custody or sole legal custody.
