I am very much in love with my boyfriend, who I plan to marry this summer. I am hesitant about signing a prenuptial agreement because I feel it would send the wrong message. What are the pros and cons of signing such a document?

One of the main sources of conflict among couples is money. A prenuptial agreement provides an opportunity for the parties to speak openly about the economic aspect of their marriage and define financial issues. It is important that you and your boyfriend both find the terms of the prenuptial agreement to be fair and feel that you would be well-provided for. This type of contract can also reduce stress in a tense situation by allocating responsibilities. A prenuptial agreement can also provide financial protection to the less wealthy spouse and allow the parties, rather than a court, decide for themselves, how they would like to divide their assets in the event of divorce. Additionally, prenuptial agreements enable couples to override state law. Since most states follow an equitable distribution system, the division of assets is unlikely to be 50-50 since a court would make the determination of which spouse made a financial contribution to the marriage and would split the assets accordingly. One of the cons of signing a prenuptial agreement is that it can sap the romance and spiritual aspect of the union. It can also psychologically undermine the marriage by causing some individuals to doubt its strength and lose trust in the emotional bond.
