A marriage engagement is a private agreement between parties to become married at a point in the future. It is not a legally binding contract, nor is it an agreement that is adjudicated in court or recognized by a court official. As such, as a private citizen you are free to become engaged at any time during your divorce proceedings.
Under Florida divorce law, there is no waiting period for remarriage following the dissolution of a marriage. This means that you may re-marry when your divorce decree is final. The only area where you can run into trouble is if you have joint assets; it is essential that none of those assets were used or contributed to the purchase of an engagement ring since this could be considered illegal conversion of property. A family law attorney could help you ensure that you do not expose yourself to any liability in this regard.
