I am getting a divorce.  Because I have kids and property, it is going to be a fairly complex case. I want to hire a divorce attorney, but do not know where to start. How do I make sure I find a good one?

There are many ways to find a good family law attorney.  You can begin by asking your family and friends for referrals.  This is often the most reliable option because people can speak to their own experiences.  Another option is to call your state bar for a referral.  Your state’s bar association will have a great deal of information on local attorneys, such as their practice areas and whether they have had any complaints.  Even if you receive a referral from a friend, you should call the state bar to verify the information you receive.  A final option is to check sources such as Martindale-Hubbell.  This is a professional source that rates attorneys based on their performance and their colleagues’ opinions of their abilities.  Finally, after meeting with an attorney, you should follow your instincts.  If you do not like a particular attorney, you should consider going with someone else.
