Can I stop paying child support if I lost my job?

I was recently laid off in Georgia, and I am paying child support to my ex-wife. I am afraid that I will not have the money to do so next month. Will Georgia child support law allow me to pay less? What can I do?

I would start out by asking your ex-wife if she would mind if you took a temporary break in paying the child support or if she would allow you to lessen the amount paid for a few months or until you can find a job. If she agrees to this get the agreement in writing and have both of you sign it. If this doesn’t work then you may have to go through the courts which can be expensive, but if you have no options left and want to try for a reduction you can always search for a lawyer who will be willing to do the work for you pro bono and maybe they can counsel you on other options that may be available to you.
