What is involved in an overseas military divorce?

My husband and I are both in the military, and are currently stationed in Italy.  We have mutually agreed that we would like to get a divorce, and since we are both to be deployed for another year, we would like to complete the process here.  What is involved in an overseas divorce when both parties are in the military?

The issues involved in getting divorced while living abroad are global as well as local. Certain considerations will undoubtedly come up when you are both living overseas in the same location and need to file for divorce in the country you are living in, including even if you can file for divorce in that country at all, and also whether that divorce will be recognized and actionable in your home country.  A divorce overseas can be more complicated since an expatriate divorce will most likely need to adhere to local laws.  A military divorce generally follows military divorce laws.  Besides understanding the basic divorce process, military couples need to understand the factors that will affect their divorce as a result of military service.  For example, it is important to know about the federal law that divides military retired pay.  My advice would be to retain the services of a divorce lawyer familiar with military law, especially military divorce law.
