Gays Argue that Massachusetts has Lowest Divorce Rate in Country

August 19, 2009

The right for gay and lesbian couples to marry has been a hot button issue for several decades. The homosexual individuals believe that their constitutional rights- the pursuit of happiness- has been taken away from them, and even banned in many states. Opponents of gay marriage say that allowing gay marriage will open the doors to a floodgate of problems and that it will undermine the traditional meaning of marriage.

Conservative naysayers say that if gay marriage is allowed, the divorce rate will increase, more unstable homes for children will ensue and that lawmakers will be forced to allow polygamists and other non-traditional forms of marriage.

However, researchers have found that the rate of divorce in Massachusetts- where gay marriage has been legal for the past five years- is the lowest in the country. This does not necessarily mean that gay couples are more likely to stay together, but it does mean that they are not more likely to get a divorce, therefore, invalidating one of the conservative arguments.
