Research Shows that Divorce has Affect on Physical Health

August 5, 2009

A study, which was recently published in The Journal of Health and Social Behavior, has shown that when a marriage ends, by death or by divorce, the spouse or spouses usually suffer physically. The stress over the loss of a loved one or a failed marriage can often cause individuals to fall ill or to be susceptible to injury or disease.

The study was completed as a survey of more than 8,500 men and women in their 50s and early 60s. It was found that those who were married were generally healthier. This is most likely attributed to the fact that married partners share health benefits and the additional care from another individual. However, those who have divorced (even after a remarriage) or who have lost a spouse, suffer the most, both physically and mentally.

The research is invaluable to those who are considering or currently going through a divorce. Medical experts are now able to provide these individuals with concrete evidence and give them the necessary advice to take special care of themselves during the difficult time.
