If you have decided to get a divorce, there will be at least some divorce paperwork involved. These divorce papers are necessary for the court handling the divorce to get information about all the aspects of a marriage.
Court Required Information
The judge handling a particular divorce case will need to know as much about the marriage as possible. This information will determine property division, child custody & support decisions, the availability and amount of spousal support plus any other financial or tangible assets given to one or both parties. The information also forms the foundation of the divorce record available with the court.
Some information that must be given includes:
- A list of assets and who owns each asset
- Tax returns and general tax information for each spouse
- Income generated by each spouse on a monthly and/or yearly basis
- A list of property that came into the marriage along with property that was acquired during the marriage
- Information on any children living in the household (parentage, ages, needs, etc.)
Finalizing Divorce
After a divorce is final and the divorce decree is issued, the parties will have a divorce certificate listing the date when the divorce became final.
Divorce certificates operate in the same manner as marriage certificates but signify the end of a marriage instead of the beginning of one. A divorced person will need a copy of the divorce certificate to verify that a previous marriage ended, particularly when changing names or remarrying.
