Divorce for men can be an extremely stressful time, especially if they are worried about losing custody of their children. Family courts are still more apt to give physical custody to the mother, especially if she has been the primary caregiver. When going through this difficult process, it is wise to come up with a strategy that will work to your advantage.

Divorce Strategies for Men

Most men tend to be more logical creatures than women. Some may think that their partner isn’t serious about the divorce or that their spouse will change her mind and come back to them. Do not let your spouse play head games with you. If she has already spoken with an attorney or filed a divorce petition, you had better get ready to fight for your rights, including your property, your assets, and, most importantly, your kids. Following are some tips on what to do during this process:

Write Everything Down

It is easy to get caught up in the emotions and you may feel that your life is on a rollercoaster. If you have been separated from your children, write down every time you see or speak with them. This will go a long way in proving that you are interested in their welfare.

Joint Finances

Most couples have credit cards and checking accounts where both parties have access. It may be a good idea to cancel any joint credit cards if you’re worried about your spouse running up expensive charges. You may want to leave some money in the joint checking for paying the bills. However, you should open another account solely in your name where you can deposit your paycheck.

Your House

The family home can be a huge source of combat between the parties during divorce. If you move out, this can be viewed as abandoning your family. Only a court can issue an order requiring you to leave, not her attorney. If possible, talk with your spouse about selling the home so that both of you can make a fresh start.

Custody Arrangements

Your best approach is to work out a parenting agreement with your spouse. If you can sit down and agree on joint custody, the court will look favorably on this and probably grant both of you equal time. If you cannot reach an agreement, consider hiring a mediator to help you.

Remain Calm

This may be one of the most stressful experiences you can go through. Try to remain organized, calm and eat healthy. Do not start hitting the bottle or become vindictive against your spouse. This will only work against you in divorce court. Try to be courteous at all times when speaking with your wife. If she becomes antagonistic or belligerent, terminate the conversation and have your attorney make any future contact.

Talk to a Divorce Attorney

While the family courts still favor women, divorce for men doesn’t have to mean that they will lose custody of their home or children or wind up paying exorbitant sums of money in alimony and child support. It is important to have legal representation and hiring a divorce attorney to protect your best interests may be the smartest choice you can make.
