What a Woman Facing Divorce Should Do

If you are wondering what a woman facing divorce should do, then it is probably in your absolute best interest to contact a family law attorney for advice and assistance.  Additionally, you will need to do the three Rs: relax, relate and release.

What a Woman Facing Divorce Should Do

Divorce can be a very complicated thing for a woman to deal with, especially if she is not legally prepared.  There are legal issues that surround the divorce such as custody, property settlements, not to mention court fees.  This does not even account for the emotional and psychological issues that may take their toll throughout the divorce process.

You might consider filing for marital separation first.  This will give you a chance to see if you want to actually go through with the divorce.  Filing for marital separation is also what is required to file for an uncontested divorce in many states. If you are at a point where you realize that divorce is the end result, then you should have a plan of action in place.  This will help you in the interim and in the long run, financially and emotionally.

You may want to start putting money aside as a safety net just in case you soon-to-be ex fights against having to pay you alimony and/or child support.  Alimony and child support may not be enough to support you and your children, so you need to have your ducks lined up if you don't have a career or stable finance already.  Getting your financial ducks lined up includes:

  • Reducing debt
  • Paying your bills
  • Building and securing credit
  • Creating a budget

Re-plan your career.  This is one of those essential parts of what a woman facing divorce should do.  If you realize that your current salary is not enough to provide for you and your children, then you will need to re-assess and re-train yourself so that you can get into a position that will be able to provide a comfortable lifestyle for you and your children.

Seek out a support system.  You will need this.  Whether these people are your family or friends, make sure that you can rely on them during your time of need.  Emotionally, a support system will make all of the difference.

Getting Help

Above all, seek out a good family law attorney and a divorce mediator.  With these two individuals guiding you, your transition through a divorce could be less hectic, more structured, and just better overall for all parties involved.
