There may be a point in time when you have to leave your child in the care of another adult when you may be out of town on business or need time to recuperate from a medical procedure. When this happens, you should set up temporary guardianship which gives that person permission to authorize medical care and other important decisions on your child’s behalf. You can do this by filling out temporary legal guardianship forms.
Legal Guardianship Requirements
By obtaining legal guardianship of a minor child, most states will require the person to have a criminal history check completed. If the guardian did not live with the child prior to the appointment, he or she will need to temporarily live in the same house as the child. After a temporary guardianship form has been filled out and the rights have been established, the guardian is responsible for providing some of the following:
- A home for the child
- Medical care, including dental and vision care
- Food and clothing
- School supplies
The guardian must also ensure that the child attends school or be home schooled if the child is of school age. When you are granted temporary guardianship, it’s more than just a temporary adoption. The guardian must be willing to make sacrifices for the well being of the child. A legal guardian has the same responsibilities for care and control of a child as a parent does and the guardians must also be kind and loving toward the child. Once the court has granted the legal guardianship, the have the right to raise the child without interference from anyone, including the child’s parents.
